US and EU urge Opec to boost output ahead of winter

Opec came under renewed pressure yesterday from the US and Europe to boost its production as prices surged to new highs amid falling crude oil inventories ahead of the winter peak season.

The calls came even though the Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries, the oil cartel that controls 40 per cent of the world's output, yesterday formally began the production increase of 500,000 barrels a day that it agreed in September.
