Far-reaching change to the UK telecommunications market was heralded on Tuesday, as France Telecom and Deutsche Telekom set out plans for a merger of their British mobile phone businesses.

The plans will be closely scrutinised around the world as a model for mobile consolidation in a large, mature market – not least because of the high risks associated with the joint venture.
