Israeli police stormed the compound of Jerusalem’s al-Aqsa mosque on Sunday, firing stun grenades to disperse dozens of Palestinian protestors who had pelted them with rocks in the latest eruption of violence at the city’s holiest Muslim shrine.
While the unrest did not signal an immediate slide into widespread violence and did not result in any serious injuries, it highlighted the tensions surrounding the future of the holy city in the long-simmering conflict between Israel and the Palestinians.
