Sarkozy accused of forging ties with National Front leader

Rivals yesterday rounded on Nicolas Sarkozy, the right-wing frontrunner in France's presidential election, accusing him of forging links with the far-right nationalist party of Jean-Marie Le Pen.

Mr Sarkozy, who has recently given his campaign a renewed emphasis on crime and national identity, needs to win back the voters who propelled Mr Le Pen into a shock second place in France's 2002 elections.
