FSA bolsters protection for savers

The City watchdog on Thursday moved to bolster investor confidence by changing the rules of the deposit protection scheme to ensure savers will not lose out in building society mergers.

The action by the Financial Services Authority will allow building societies that merge to maintain their separate compensation limits. It follows concerns raised by customers of Nationwide – the UK’s largest mutual – along with those of the Cheshire and Derbyshire building societies, which will be merged next month.
