Indonesia targets household chickens

Indonesia announced on Monday its most extensive cull of backyard poultry and a “comprehensive” restructuring of the poultry industry in an effort to contain a growing outbreak of the deadly H5N1 strain of avian influenza.

The initiative comes as Thailand announced its first outbreak in six months, in ducks in northern Phitsanulok province, and Vietnam said its outbreak had spread to a seventh province.
