In the mid-1980s, a scare story went round US business circles. Japanese interests, it was said, had used freedom of information laws to obtain confidential details about the design of the space shuttle’s nose cone.

There was only one problem with the claim. According to Jim Amos, an information specialist and honorary senior research fellow at University College London’s constitution unit, it wasn’t true.
