Dominique de Villepin's attempt to tackle youth unemployment by making it easier to fire new recruits is jeopardising his position as French prime minister. So why is an identical step being mulled in Germany raising only indifference there?

On one hand the different reaction neatly plays to national stereotypes about riot-loving French and disciplined Germans who, in Lenin's famous phrase, would buy a platform ticket before storming the station.
