Dozen big contractors could take welfare role

A dozen large private sector "prime contractors" will take over responsibility for getting the long-term unemployed off benefits and into work in what could become a "multibillion-pound" welfare industry, under an overhaul announced on Monday.

David Freud, whose independent report was commissioned by the Department for Work and Pensions, said it would take six yearsto trial and roll out con-tracts with welfare-to-work companies.
