BG Group has today revealed a recommended cash takeover offer worth A$5.6bn (£2.2bn) for Queensland Gas Company in a deal that will give the UK oil and gas group a leading role in the development of Australia's coal bed methane gas reserves.

The deal follows BG's failure to win Origin Energy, a larger Australian group also with extensive coal bed methane assets, this year by an A$13.8bn offer.
