Amsterdam-based architecture practice S333 has the best logo of any I’ve ever seen in the industry. Created by Dutch graphic designer Paul Ouwerkerk, it’s a kinetic series of fractured figure eights revolving in hypnotic patterns. But what does it mean? “Nothing,” founder Dominic Papa says. “We set up the practice in 1997 but the name came in 1991 [the members were jointly entering architectural competitons] as a reaction against starchitecture and the star system. We had to think it up an hour before handing in a competition submission.”
It was a prescient move. Starchitecture – the dominance of big name architects – was just emerging and already the members of S333 were setting themselves up in opposition to it. It was also hugely appropriate. S333 is among the most sophisticated and resolutely international of young practices and its members have carefully avoided the lure of a signature style.
