Ministers will respond within weeks to urgent pleas from the car industry for a multi-billion-pound state-backed loan, government insiders said on Thursday.

Peter Mandelson, the business secretary, was “left in little doubt” of the extent of the crisis hitting the industry after hour-long talks with 17 representatives of car manufacturers, retailers and the supply chain, officials said.
