It is a curious fact of PC life that while hardware prices tend to fall in line with Moore's Law, software prices often head in the other direction. The cost of fitting out a new PC with software often far exceeds the cost of the hardware itself.

This need not be so. As I have been discovering, there are plenty of excellent free software packages out there, some as good as or better than their paid-for brethren.
