ASIA-PACIFIC Indian police have charged a senior cabinet minister and Congress party veteran with breaking the country’s stringent anti-dowry laws, causing embarrassment to a government that has put the promotion of women’s rights at the forefront of its political agenda.
Arjun Singh, the minister for human resource development, and several family members have been accused of demanding payment from his grandson’s bride. Mr Singh has denied any wrongdoing and on Monday vowed to defend himself in court.
