Departure turns spotlight on China's role

As the Hong Kong public's confidence in Tung Chee-hwa, the chief executive, has fallen over the past two years, Beijing has tightened its grip on the territory's governance.

The mainland Chinese government has been unequivocal about its desire for political stability in Hong Kong, extending economic incentives such as a bilateral trade deal with mainland China and relaxing rules on tourist travel in the hope of quelling popular frustration with the administration.
