Before he led Greece’s Socialist party to electoral triumph on Sunday, George Papandreou’s political achievements mostly took place outside the country.

As foreign minister in a previous Socialist government, Mr Papandreou launched a rapprochement with Turkey, Greece’s traditionally hostile neighbour, that brought a surge in bilateral trade and investment.
