NYT defends circulation data

The New York Times on Wednesday defended the integrity of its circulation figures after it emerged that the Securities and Exchange Commission had asked several US newspaper publishers for information about circulation practices.

Groups including Dow Jones, Gannett and the Washington Post Company have been approached by the SEC, which has also contacted the Audit Bureau of Circulations (ABC), the industry's monitoring body, following mis-stated or inflated circulation figures at some publishers.
