Dovish Fed gives equities much-needed boost

Equity markets in the US and Europe enjoyed one of their best days of the year after comments by Donald Kohn, the vice-chairman of the Federal Reserve, appeared to increase the chances of a cut in US interest rates next month.

Mr Kohn said that recent market turbulence might restrict credit to businesses and consumers more than had previously been thought, suggesting that he saw greater risks to economic growth than a month ago.
