Vietnam pledges to step up fight on graft

The reappointed leader of Vietnam’s ruling Communist party pledged yesterday to step up a battle against official corruption by improving government management, increasing surveillance of bureaucrats and being “resolute” with punishments.

“We always try to curb negative phenomena, including corruption,” said Nong Duc Manh, 65, shortly after he secured a second term as the party’s powerful general-secretary during the party congress, which concluded yesterday.
