India looks beyond copycat medicines

Ranbaxy, the Indian pharmaceutical group which on Wednesday settled a patent dispute with AstraZeneca, made its name perfecting ways to make copycat versions of existing medicines after their patents expired.

Now, supported by fresh investment, researchers at Ranbaxy are trying to develop entirely new drugs that will instead win patent exclusivity for their company.
