UK carmakers ask for aid as sales see sharp decline

Britain's car industry yesterday became the latest to ask for government financial aid and tax breaks to address "unprecedented circumstances" this year.

In a letter sent to Alastair Darling, the chancellor, groups representing UK manufacturers and dealers urged the government to allow their financing arms to tap its special liquidity arrangements for banks.
