£200m ‘golden’ incentive for home-grown athletes

Britain is aiming to win 65 medals in the 2012 Olympic Games in London, after chancellor Gordon Brown announced that £200m of public money would be earmarked for elite athletes in the run-up to the event.

Coupled with £300m of already committed National Lottery funding and £100m that will be sought from commercial sponsors, Mr Brown said that more than £600m would be available to Britain’s top athletes.
