Continuing education is an important part of a US architect’s professional life. For a start, states require architects to undergo a certain number of hours of training and development a year to maintain their licences. However, as sustainability becomes more firmly embedded in the lexicon of the profession, the need to keep up to date with green building developments is as pressing.

For Marc Sloot, both these elements are key parts of his professional development. His firm, Minneapolis-based SALA Architects, focuses on residential buildings. The firm also promotes the benefits of green buildings and helps clients certify the sustainability credentials of their homes. He cites a variety of sources when it comes to keeping up with developments in his profession. Some of the credits required for the state licence – in Minnesota architects must take about 24 hours of accredited continuing education every two years – can be acquired at events held by industry associations such as the American Institute of Architects.
