ANC putsch clears way for Zuma

South Africa’s ruling party was on Sunday night scrambling to avert the mass resignation of ministers loyal to President Thabo Mbeki after removing him from office in the biggest political upheaval since the fall of apartheid.

The African National Congress was preparing to install a caretaker administration led by allies of Jacob Zuma, whose long campaign to vanquish his former ally came to fruition with a midnight putsch on Friday.
