Mining rekindles after hitting the depths

The coal mining industry is showing signs of a revival after being in decline since the 1920s.

Although coal fell from favour with power companies during the "dash for gas" in the early 1990s, the recent jump in gas prices triggered an increase in coal-fired electricity generation as coal plants were called on to satisfy demand.
