Stellar results mask a lack of flexibility

Singapore's sixth-grade students this month sat their primary school leaving exams. The stakes for the 12-year-olds are high since the exam results will probably determine what they will do for the rest of lives.

Those who perform well will be sent to advanced state secondary schools that are seen as a guaranteed route to a university education and a professional career. Those with lower marks will attend "normal" high schools with lesser prospects of university entry.
