A court in Hamburg ruled yesterday that Mamoun Darkazanli, a Syrian-German businessman indicted in Spain on charges of being a member of the al-Qaeda terrorist network, could be extradited to Spain.

Police sought last night to extradite Mr Darkazanli, although one of his lawyers said legal steps had been taken to block his removal from Germany.
