Profits set a Japanese record

Fujio Cho, president of Toyota, is typical of the Japanese carmaker’s top management: modest but quietly confident.

When the company passed Ford Motor of the US to become the second biggest vehicle manufacturer a year ago, he said he was “surprised” by the news. He laughed off suggestions that the company could go after General Motors, the world’s number one, and said he was “not personally interested” in the rankings.
