Obama pledges to slash wasteful spending

Barack Obama, US president-elect, on Tuesday pledged to slash spending on wasteful programmes to help meet the cost of a large-scale stimulus package he announced on Monday to “jolt the economy back into shape”.

In his second press conference on the economy in two days – a third is scheduled for Wednesday – Mr Obama said: “If we’re going to make the investments we need, we must also be willing to shed the spending we don’t.”
