Energy research and development has a lot of ground to make up, after more than two wasted decades of declining expenditure.

After peaking in real terms around 1980, worldwide energy R&D fell steadily in both private and public sectors, for a variety of reasons ranging from the privatisation of European energy companies to government complacency.
