Telefónica on Tuesday announced it had signed an exclusive deal to supply the Palm Pre, the mobile handset widely seen as the most significant challenger to Apple’s iPhone, in four European countries.

The deal is a coup for Telefónica, Spain’s leading telecoms group, which fought off interest in the Pre from European rivals such as Vodafone.
