Brussels urged to extend laws against age bias

Hundreds of thousands of elderly people refused health services or barred from driving and travel insurance on the grounds of their age would be protected by law if calls for a new European directive are heeded.

Age campaign groups from nine European countries, including the UK, have submitted a draft directive, for consideration by the European Union. The proposals, written by a leading British barrister, are based on legal models already operating in the US, Belgium, Ireland, Australia and Canada.
