Spanish unemployment surges above 3m

Nearly a million people in Spain lost their jobs last year, with unemployment rising 47 per cent to reach 3.1m in December, according to figures released by the labour ministry on Thursday.

Maravillas Rojo, secretary-general for employment, said 2009 would be a “very difficult” year. “Unemployment will continue to increase due to the fall in economic activity and demand.”
