Early intervention 'could free £3bn a year for NHS'

The National Health Service could release about £3bn a year by better use of medicines and particularly by early intervention in chronic diseases, Dr Richard Barker, director-general of the Association of the British Pharmaceutical Industry will argue today.

The forthcoming reduction in the rate of NHS growth, he said, provided an opportunity to focus on real effectiveness and value for money and not just a "more and cheaper" approach to health spending.
