News International denies hacking claims

News International, the owner of the News of the World, issued a strong denial last night that its reporters and staff had been involved in illegal activity to “hack”, or break into, the mobile telephones of a large number of well-known figures.

In its delayed riposte to articles in The Guardian , News International accused the newspaper of printing “irresponsible and unsubstantiated allegations” which, it said, were false.
