Stern Hu, an executive at Rio Tinto, the multinational miner has spent almost four months in China under arrest, and there is no reason to think he will return home to Australia for the foreseeable future.

Mr Hu and three colleagues were arrested on suspicion of stealing trade secrets after negotiating for lower iron ore prices between Rio and Chinese steelmakers. His situation highlights a year of extraordinary tension and suspicion between China and the global mining industry.
