LCH.Clearnet, Europe’s largest derivatives clearing house, plans to start clearing shipping derivatives from July. This will put it in direct competition with the New York Mercantile Exchange and Oslo-based Nos Clearing.

The London-based clearer is already in competition with Nymex in the clearing of energy futures. The move into shipping represents a growing interest in a market that has tripled in the past three years to about $30bn.
