Brown admits cuts are imminent

Gordon Brown explicitly admitted for the first time that public spending cuts were imminent, moving the debate into a new phase and suggesting that the axe could be swung within months.

The prime minister told trade unionists that the government would have to “cut costs, cut inefficiencies, cut unnecessary programmes and cut lower priority budgets”. He also warned of a new pay austerity, saying there would have to be “realistic” public sector pay settlements.
