Court ends Bayer Yasmin patent

Shares in Bayer, the German drugs and chemicals group, dropped more than 6 per cent yesterday after a US court overturned the patent on its top-selling oral contraceptive.

The district of New Jersey court on Monday evening ruled invalid the patent on Yasmin, so paving the way for Barr Laboratories, the US-quoted generic drug manufacturer that launched the challenge, to introduce a cheaper version.
