Smurfit Kappa resists fall in demand

Smurfit Kappa, Europe’s largest cardboard box manufacturer, lifted profits by 30 per cent in the first half in spite of falling demand as regional economies slow.

The company, led by Gary McGann, chief executive, said profit before exceptionals for the six months to June 30 rose from €139m to €180.2m (£142m), sending the shares up 10 per cent to €4.99.
