Media hype about "designer babies" and "saviour siblings" gave the public a distorted view of reproductive and genetic technologies, the chairwoman of the government's Human Genetics Commission said yesterday.

This distracted attention from issues that mattered, such as ensuring that embryo screening to avoid inherited disease was safe.
