China’s booming economy pushes UK to fifth place

A weak performance in 2005 has allowed the UK to be overtaken in the economic rankings by a booming China, official figures published in London and Beijing confirmed on Wednesday.

Although a surging services sector helped the UK economy to grow faster than expected in the fourth quarter, output for the whole of 2005 expanded by a below trend 1.8 per cent, placing UK gross domestic product at about $2.03 trillion.
