An open approach helps oil the wheels

Just days after the US stoked protectionist fears in mid-September by slapping stiff duties on tyre imports from China, Canada unveiled plans for a significant move in the opposite direction.

The ruling Conservative government in Ottawa aims to abolish all remaining tariffs on imported machinery and equipment used by domestic manufacturers, saving them an estimated C$250m-300m a year.
