Britain's ruling party descends into chaos over PM's leadership

Gordon Brown, British prime minister, yesterday watched apparently impotent as his ruling Labour party inched closer to civil war, with senior party figures laying down the battle-lines for a possible leadership contest in the autumn.

Mr Brown was advised by his closest colleagues to take a proper holiday this year and is spending two weeks at the English seaside, but around him his party has descended into chaos.
