Liberalised market for water wins backing

The prospect of households switching their water company as easily as they switch their gas and electricity supplier appeared more likely on Thursday after the government outlined its review of competition in the industry.

The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs said it had appointed Professor Martin Cave of the Warwick Business School to investigate whether greater competition in the English water industry could lead to more efficient water use and better service.
