BHP clears US antitrust concerns over Rio

BHP Billiton, the Australian mining company, on Thursday said US antitrust authorities had largely cleared its proposed $170bn acquisition of rival Rio Tinto.

The news now puts the spotlight on competition authorities in Europe, which have already opened a preliminary investigation into the proposed deal and have until Friday to decide whether to move to an in-depth inquiry.
