A collision between two Chinese passenger trains on Monday killed at least 70 people and injured 420, in the country’s worst rail disaster in more than a decade.
The pre-dawn crash in eastern Shandong province was quickly blamed by the railway ministry and state media on human error. However, the accident is likely to raise questions behind closed doors in Beijing over funding shortfalls and the government’s attempts to privatise parts of the rail industry.
