Long relegated to the margins of the investment world, "green" investing has had something of a coming-out party this month.

Last week, General Electric said it planned to double its annual investment in renewable energy technologies to $1.5bn by 2010. The next day, at a UN conference in New York, 26 institutional investors pledged to invest $1bn in renewable energy technologies to help combat global climate change.
