US midwest business activity contracts

A pick-up in US new orders and production helped a barometer of regional business activity decline less than expected last month alleviating some of the concerns about the outlook for the US economy.

However, a sharp jump in the prices paid by businesses for raw materials gave economists ground for caution amid fears that stagflation – the combination of rising prices and economic stagnation – could yet strike the US economy.
