Auditor general quits over expenses

Ministers signalled a shake-up of the public spending watchdog’s governance on Thursday as the comptroller and auditor general quit following a row over his expenses bill.

Sir John Bourn said he would retire in January after two decades at the head of the National Audit Office because regulatory changes presented an unavoidable conflict of interest.
